How net salary is calculated in Croatia in 2026
A Croatian payslip starts from gross 1 (bruto I), the salary in the contract. The employee pays 20% pension contributions: 15% to the first pillar (MIO I) and 5% to the second (MIO II). For gross salaries up to 1,300 EUR the first-pillar base is reduced: by 300 EUR for salaries up to 700 EUR, and by half of the difference to 1,300 EUR above that. This is why low salaries keep more of their gross.
Income tax is charged on gross minus contributions minus the personal allowance of 600 EUR a month. Each city or municipality sets its own two rates within legal ranges. The lower rate applies to a monthly tax base up to 5,000 EUR and the higher rate above it. Zagreb charges 23% and 33%, Split 21.5% and 32%, Rijeka 20% and 25%. The calculator lists the largest cities that set their own rates; most other cities and municipalities charge the statutory 20% and 30%, and the Tax Administration publishes the rates of every place.
The employer adds 16.5% health insurance on top of gross 1. That total is gross 2 (bruto II), the cost of the job.
